World cup 2010
My memories of the world cup in South Africa of 2010 are dominated by the sound of the Vuvuzela
Here is a Villanelle poem I wrote halfway through the tournament, there are references to players, managers and matches.
Va Va Voom is out of tune
Vuvuzela, Vuvuzela
France v Uruguay
Too much room, too much room
Screams Maradona
As blue and white shirts fly
A match too soon for Cameroon
The strikers lacked endeavour
Defeated by, Blue Samurai
The camera sways upon its boom
Cahill sees red, should be yellow
The tears well up in his eye
A freak own goal comes too soon
For some unlucky fella
On the line, across the line, the camera doesn’t lie
Capello try’s one last fine tune
Green gets the call, then drops the ball
And eats his humble pie,
A final beckons in July.
A Villanelle.
A 19 line poem with five three-line stanzas that follow a rhyme scheme of ABA. The villanelle concludes with a four-line stanza with the pattern ABAA.
